Ethics Website Offers to Incite as Well as Inspire
When author and speaker Jim Lichtman decided to create a website dedicated to the role ethics play in modern society, he wasn’t taking on a topic that was new to him. To the contrary, Lichtman’s new website, www.ethicsstupid.com, is an extension of the subject that has been his calling for nearly 15 years. In an age where ethics have become a matter of convenience rather than principle, Lichtman has tapped into a longing for authenticity by shining a light on the places it isn’t. In the process, he has created a thought-provoking look into how ethics affects the fabric of our society as well as our everyday lives.
The author of two books, The Lone Ranger’s Code of the West and What Do You Stand For?, Lichtman does not distinguish between social ethics and personal ethics. In fact one of the primary messages of www.ethicsstupid.com, is that situations may be different, but the principles remain the same. Far from lecturing or preaching, Ethics Stupid makes its point using humor, satire, and the greatest weapon of all, the truth. At the end of the day it’s about entertaining the reader, but that’s only part of the equation. The other half is to challenge readers to live up to their higher aspirations. It’s a role legendary wordsmiths from British Author and American Patriot Thomas Paine to legendary satirist Art Buchwald have played for past generations, and a tradition Lichtman aspires to uphold.
And in the tradition of those who came before him, no issue or avenue of modern society is off limits in Lichtman’s thrice weekly blogs. From sports and politics to entertainment and religion, the high and mighty are officially on notice.
A cursory look at the world we’ve created suggests that the time is right for a website that would put the subject of ethics and ethical decision-making front and center again. It’s a conversation Lichtman has never shied away from. “Ethics is the infrastructure for the way things should work,” he says. “And how we utilize our principles in small ways, as well as those that challenge our convictions will determine the purpose and course of our lives.”
